Capitol Hill is one of the city's most popular places to live, with the largest residential historic district in the District of Columbia. Almost every street is composed of row houses of different stylistic varieties and periods forming a continuous wall broken only by street intersections. Politicos, young staffers and tourists alike head to the neighborhood both for its government buildings like the U.S. Capitol and the Supreme Court and the surrounding historic, walkable, restaurant-filled blocks. Its boundaries extend into every quadrant of the city, and within them, you’ll find several distinct communities. The historic blocks around Barracks Row and Eastern Market, for instance-with their hole-in-the-wall shops-could hardly feel more different from the slick new eateries and luxe apartment buildings rising around the ballpark in Navy Yard. Head north to H Street, and you'll find a funkier scene, with offbeat restaurants and plenty of nightlife. For getting around: think Red, Orange, and Blue Metro lines; ideal bike routes to any corner of the city; and busses 30N, 30S, 32, 33, 34 and 36.
